Trail riding in Treeless Fell Lapland

Horse riding tour for 4 days in Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area

Welcome to enjoy unforgettable horse riding tour in wilderness of Fell Lapland – The Land of the Reindeer! This trail riding trip takes you along sandy roads, trough wild forests, by lakes and over hills and fells. We overnight in wilderness cabins without electricity or running water. We will also build up the fence for horses and prepare the camp together. During this amazing experience you will take care of your own horse and together we will prepare our meals and clean cabins in the mornings. Our finn horses are very safe and used to co-operating with different people.


Day 1

Your guide welcomes you at Kittilä airport followed by the transfer to Polar Lights Tours Horse & husky camp close to Levi. The first accommodation will be in Aurora wilderness cabins which are situated 1,5 km from the camp, on a peaceful spot in the middle of wilderness. The cabins have two beds, table and chairs and an eco-toilet. Your guide will introduce to you the program of trail riding tour with original Finn horses during the next days. Welcome dinner and overnight.

Day 2

After breakfast we pack our bags and will be transferred to Näkkälä Village in Enontekiö. After arrival in Näkkälä we prepare together the horses and saddle them, and the first trail riding is ready to start. We will get to know our horses and routines; how to lead horses, how to start trotting or cantering etc. On the first day the route goes along sandy roads, hillocks and hills in fell forest. Our riding distance today is ca. 18 km. On the midway we prepare a picnic lunch by campfire. In the afternoon we arrive to a wilderness cabin where we have the dinner and spend the night.

Day 3

After breakfast we pack up, prepare the horses and continue riding. The riding distance today is ca. 25 km. The terrain is mainly treeless sandy hillocks and fells with small, beautiful streams and lakes, bogs and hills. We enjoy a picnic lunch along the way by a campfire. We will ride to Pöyrisjärvi, to the summer place of reindeer herders, where our home for the next two nights will be very basic wilderness cabin without electricity or running water. After taking care of the horses we prepare dinner and sleep well in the cleanest air of Europe.


Day 4

This day is to discover surroundings of lake Pöyrisjärvi. We will ride today ca. 25km. Daily routines are as usual. No mobile connection! Picnic lunch during the day. Dinner and overnight in the same cabin as on previous day.

Day 5

After breakfast we take care of the horses and start the riding back to the village Näkkälä. The riding distance today is ca. 25 km. We prepare a picnic lunch along the way by a campfire. In the late afternoon we return to Näkkälä. After taking care of the horses we have a transfer back to Polar Lights Tours Horse & Husky camp, where we can enjoy the sauna and a delicious farewell dinner. And finally a relaxing sleep in will be in the Aurora wilderness cabins.

Day 6

After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye to the beautiful finn horses and sceneries of Lapland and our guide who takes you to the airport.

Price includes:
Return airport transfers from/to Kittilä airport, first and last night in Aurora wilderness cabins (two persons per cabin) close to Polar Lights Tours Horse & Husky camp, 3 nights in wilderness cabin or tents without private facilities, running water or electricity, full board (from 1st day dinner to 6 th day breakfast) with Lapland’s specialties (e.g. sautéed reindeer, salmon, white fish, perch, forest mushrooms and berries, etc.), horse and it’s equipment, equipment for you: saddlebags and helmet, a qualified English speaking guide, transportation of the luggage during tour.


For additional charge we offer:
• sleeping bag 25 €/person/week
• bed sheets 25 €/person/week
• extra night in Aurora wilderness cabin 120€/person/night incl. light evening meal and breakfast
• hiking and canoeing tours

Recommended equipment for the trail riding trip:
• underwear for six days
• riding shoes / hiking shoes, preferably waterproof
• camp shoes, e.g. crocs
• suitable riding clothing (two trousers, chaps, waterproof riding jacket)
• at least two pairs of riding gloves
• outdoor clothing (preferably wind- and waterproof)
• warm fleece shirt, woolen pullover
• set of extra clothing
• thermal underwear/long johns
• swimming suit, towels
• sleeping bag
• personal toiletries (e.g. shampoo and soap) and medicine
• good sunglasses and sunscreen
• mosquito spay and hat
• camera, headlamp

Please note: There is no electricity in the wilderness huts.
